Bibimbap
For all of those who want to know more about Bibimbap (the food we made in our podcast)
Bibimbap is a traditional Korean dish where we mix cooked rice and steamed vegetables with a typical Korean sauce (Go-chu-jang).
People also enjoy it with egg and meat. It looks like just a random jumble, but it tastes beyond your imagination! It is the taste of KOREA.
Short advertisement :) you will enjoy.
Two restaurants that carry this dish are
1. Toyo Grill
2. Seoul Garden.
Please try it! You will not regret. :) <3

Family
When I was in Korea this winter we did an early celebration for my birthday.
It is quite typical to have a big dinner on a birthday in Korea.
I had so much food that day with my family. I miss them dearly.
My mother was really worried I would have a tough year, and she cooked so much food for my birthday.

Hello there
I'm in a film class and we are watching films and at the end of the semseter we have to write a long paper on a single film selection. This film is called 'Phenomenon' with John Travolta in it.
I remember nothing really but a couple scenes. At the age I was scared of the movie. It's not exactly a kid's movie. But, it's a full circle since I am writing about it now -with so many interesting thoughts for a class.
The movie taps into the thought of "abundance". We humans are capable of an infinite range of actions, thoughts.. etc. However we are only using part of it. we are "abundant".
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. It's not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.'"
This is actually a quote form the movie 'Coach Carter'. We are in fear of our greatest potential. Coach Carter says that we must realize this and move into veiwing our greatest potential- which is exactly what John Travolta is faced with in Phenomenon. A earth shattering moment of realizing his potential.
I am writing a paper on this and I am talking about it in my blog.
this isn't cool is it.
My point is.. we are more than what we present to be, but we fear the highest possibility of ourselves. This film shows why we would fear it (being cut off of the comfort of society).
Ernest Becker says that we are all lying to ourselves to make ourselves comfortable of not living up to that potential. Lies that fame us into only a part of our potential. I think i agree.
I hope you get a chance to watch Phenomenon over Spring break!
:-)
bye everyone.
Secret Garden

Winter
I have a true passion in the arts. This winter break I had a period of time where I traveled by myself.
I went to New York, to a empty apartment of my friend's and traveled.
I ate by myself, went to museums, watched musicals ..etc.
I enjoy being with people, but at the same time I wanted to have time for myself so I could enjoy and think.
(I know this sounds weird.. I am writing this and I find it weird but I really needed this kind of "time)
I hate it when I go to an art museum with a friend- and end up chatting more than enjoying art. This trip was a treat.
The Gugenheim Museum
I loved being able to just step outside of the normal routine and just enjoy time for its sake.
I did get to meet some of my New York friends so I wasn't totally alone.

ESSAY :)
I'm so suprised by how much I can do. Literally I only started like 3months ago..
=) I'm excited about learning this new language <3
love and peace,

There is Korean and Japanese food there! AND the sushi is good.
I recommend the Crunch Maki. ^*^
<3 I posted a link to a review site where there is the address to the restaurant. Try it when you have a chance, OR call me and lets have dinner together! ;)

My very first J-POP
^^*
I never really listen to JPOP because when I listen to music I usually appreciate the lyrics more than the melody. If it is in a different language it's hard to know the meaning of the song! but, this song is awesome ... <3 This song was recommended by my Japanese friend Sota Hasegawa! It's a song that is so uplifting! ENJOY <3
P.S Here are the lyrics in English if you want them :)
Amidst us scattering like flower petals
It was a dream-like miracle that I met you
We love each other, we fight
We climb over all sorts of walls together
If I'm reborn, I'll be a flower by your side
I wonder if the sun will always be right overhead?
I wonder if I'll always be able to protect you? Your expressions, laughing and crying
Anyway, if everything turns to nothing, I'll be even more thankful for us having met
That day, that time, the tracks left at that place
Will again give birth to new tracks
I become strong by loving, I make it through by believing
The things that you left behind even now glitter in my heart, not having disappeared
I think happily of when we met, I regained my smile
Embracing the overflowing feelings of "thanks", I move forward
Amidst us scattering like flower petals
It was a dream-like miracle that I met you
We love each other, we fight
We climb over all sorts of walls together
If I'm reborn, I want to be with you
I'm going to scatter like flower petals
I'll accept everything in this world
The thing that you left me
Is a real treasure called "now"
So living with all my might, I'll be a flower
Why do flowers wither?
Why do birds fly?
Why does the wind blow?
Why does the moon light up?
Why am I here?
Why are you here?
Why did I meet you?
Meeting you, that was fate
Amidst us scattering like flower petals
It was a dream-like miracle that I met you
We love each other, we fight
We climb over all sorts of walls together
If I'm reborn, I want to be with you
I'm going to scatter like flower petals
I'll accept everything in this world
The thing that you left me
Is a real treasure called "now"
So living with all my might, I'll be a flower
After the rain, a rainbow hangs in the sky, light is born in the mountain air
Right here, I become aware
Of a firm and important thing called "loving"
Can I still walk on? I can see it
My "feelings", pass through time, and echo into eternity
Your happiness, your pain, your everything
Well, bloom then in full, more and more and more
^^*

Interested?
Today I would like to introduce you to a drama series that I enjoyed so much.
It is...
This drama is about a music school and the passion about music. The students are all talented, some more than others. They all get together and create an orchestra. The female lead, Nodame, is a fun person. She is spontaneous and outgoing. She falls in love with one of the upper classmen, Chiaki, and the two work hard to maintain the orchestra.
I enjoyed the series because the plot is not just about love. It is more complex and deals with people and their passion about music and performance. The drama itself is very cute. The style is quite different. It seems to integrate anime and drama together making the drama unique.
It took me less than a month finishing the series and the sequel,
so I recomment you all to try it out during fall break or something!: )
Have a great week everyone!
love & peace,

the Reason
Hello!
My name is Yulie Lee and I am a Junior at Notre Dame.
I am an English major and I used to live in Lewis/PE but now I'm off campus. :)
I enjoy watching films, reading and going to delicious restaurants!
I love, ABSOLUTELY love, traveling.
The reason I chose to study Japanese:
I come from South Korea, a country with so many ties with Japan throughout history and till the present moment. However, I'm not much of a history buff. What I am interested is the culture.
My all time favorite film is Between Calm and Passion. No, I am not saying this becasue of this post, but for real, I LOVE this film. I have seen it about twenty times, literally. I am absolutely in love with the story, the acting, cinematography, music, scenery..etc. It is a hands down favorite to me. The movie is about two people in love perhaps destined for each other. Set in Italy and Japan, the movie itself is an enjoyable treat. Also, the dialogue of the movie is consisted of three languages: Italian, English and Japanese.
As I explored more about this movie I figured out that it was originally a book by a Japanese author. More specifically it was a collaboration or two Japanese authors. Kaori Ekuni and Hitonari Tsuji. What they do is they each write on a point-of-view. Kaori-san writes in the female perspective and Hitonari-san writes in the male perspective about an incident. (I just started a new book that they collaborated on called 'left eye' and ' right eye').
After finding out about these authors, I started reading Kaori Ekuni's books (translated into Korean) and found her brilliant. I enjoyed it very much and desired to learn more about Japan and Japanese. Thus, here I am! :-) I am excited to learn more and perhaps in the future read Kaori's books in the native language it was written in.
I am also excited becasue I have a Japanese friend named Sota.
I met him at a summer session a couple years ago, and he had a lot of interest in the Korean culture. He started to pick up the language and this summer he was able to speak fluently with me in Korean. He enjoys Korea quite a bit and visits very often. I just facebook messaged him that I am taking Japanese classes, and hopefully I will get to speak with him in both Korean and Japanese once I pick up the language as well! :) I am very excited.
love& peace,
yulie
